Navigation - Scale and Unit of Measurement - Section Four PDF Print E-mail

Studying for the navigation section of your private pilot exam can be an over whelming task.

Breaking it into small digestible sections can make this daunting task much easier.

These study notes are provided to you by PrivatePilotCanada.com, your source when preparing for the Transport Canada Recreational Pilot Permit written (RPPAE) for aeroplanes, and the Student Pilot and Air Regulations exam (PSTAR).

Scale and Unit of Measurement

Scale is the relationship between a unit of distance on the chart to the distance on the earth that the unit represents.

            VFR navigation Charts…….. 1:500 000

  • One inch on the chart equals 500 000 inches on the ground
  • One inch on the ground map equals 8 statute miles

            World Aeronautical Charts……… 1:1 000 000

  • One inch on the chart equals 16 statue miles on the ground

VFR Terminal Area Charts……… 1:250 000

  • One inch on the chart equals 4 statute miles on the ground
  • Charts also have a graduated scale line
  • A statue mile is a distance of  5 280 feet
  • One nautical mile is equal to 6 080 feet
  • One nautical mile is the average length of one minute of latitude
  • A knot is a speed of one nautical mile per hour
  • A kilometre is a distance of 1 000 meters
  • 66 nautical miles = 76 statute miles
  • Kilometres per hour x 0.62 = miles per hour
  • Kilometres per hour x 0.54 = knots per hour
  • Knots x 1.15 = miles per hour
  • Miles per hour divided by 1.15 = knots
  • Groundspeed = distance flown divided by time
  • Distance flown = groundspeed x time
  • Flight time = distance divided by groundspeed

Locating Position by Latitude and Longitude

  • The earth is divided into meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude
  • Two different positions on the earth’s surface are related to one another by changes in latitude or longitude
  • Meridians and parallels are number accordingly (58 OOW, 77 30 W)
